The 2023 Galway Cycle, hosted by Maynooth Students for Charity will be run in aid of ‘As Darragh Did’ over the weekend of March 31 to April 2. The Galway Cycle has been run every year since 1987 (with the exception of 2020) and raised almost €2 million for a variety of children’s charities.

This year’s route will mirror that of previous years with participants leaving the Maynooth University Campus on Friday 31st of March. The route will take them through Kinnegad, Moate and Ballinasloe before arriving in Galway sometime between 6pm-7pm. Participants will then return on Sunday (2nd April), leaving Eyre Square, making their way back to Maynooth, using the same route they used on the Friday. Participants should arrive back in Maynooth sometime between 6pm-6:30pm.

All Participants will receive a FREE Cycling Jersey and Hoodie.

This year’s chosen charity is ‘As Darragh Did’. The charity is named after Darragh McGinley, who, along with his brother Conor and sister Carla, left this world just over three years ago. “Darragh participated in everything locally from drama and art to hurling and soccer,” says his dad Andrew, “Whatever was going on, Darragh got involved. In his memory I founded the As Darragh Did Charity which helps to get people involved in their local communities too….as Darragh did. Our charity cannot succeed in achieving its purpose without your help and support, so please help us, please support us and please get involved … as Darragh did”. The vision of the charity is to advance community welfare and development through the provision of support and funding to local clubs, societies, groups and projects to enable them to increase participation and to promote social inclusion and positive integration.

The Galway cycle pride themselves on their safety record and are fully equipped for all circumstances on the weekend with a Garda escort, motorbike outriders, ambulances and mechanics’ vans. They also have buses to allow any cyclist to have a break. You DO NOT need to be able to cycle the full distance to come and join in!
