The More You Ride The Stronger Your Desire Becomes

0

It’s not that cycling is inherently difficult, (stay upright pedal in a circular motion…)

Or that devoid of pleasure…. (Amen for padded shorts)

It’s just that some of us harbor a desire to conquer new challenges and can’t help but push ourselves that little bit further.

I’m very new to cycling but my determination has led me to sign up for really tough endurance events like the Wicklow 200.

The motivation to intentionally cycle up ridiculously steep hills that make my leg scream is often lacking, but the hardest challenge …. Overcoming the negative talk in my head!!

I put myself through a lot in the quest for fitness and I’m no stranger to physical discomfort but I do find that I put myself down A LOT particularly on a tough long training spin. I constantly make negative statements about my own ability both internally and out loud.

I’m trying desperately to silence my inner critic… turning my thoughts around.

‘I’m so slow’

Slower than who? You’re faster than some and slower than others …that is life!

‘I shouldn’t have come’

The struggle is where strength is built from.

‘Why is this so hard for me, everyone else is finding is easy’

No one finds it easy, everyone’s legs hurt

‘It never gets easier’

This is because you’re not letting yourself take it easy, you’re strong and you’re pushing yourself….

‘I’m holding everyone else up’

NOT TRUE…. Everyone is enjoying catching their breath.

Mental strength is one of the most overlooked aspects of training, but one of the most important. It’s the difference between enjoying what you’re doing and hating every minute of it!!

So if you happen to meet me on the Wicklow 200 course be prepared for motivational quotes by the bucket load….
