Wet Weather Cycling

With the Irish winter climate not the most hospitable to cyclist, Cycle SuperStore staff member Michael Jordan give us his 5 top tips for cycling in the rain

  1. Be Seen. Make sure that other road users can see you especially through their fogged up and dirty windscreens. My advice would be that you are always dressed in bright clothing and are always wearing a helmet. A good set of lights, both front and back is vital. Our range of lights can be found HERE
  2. Make sure you can stop. Braking distances are much longer in WET conditions. Make sure that you have your brakes serviced and the tyres on your bike are suitable for the conditions
  3. Staying Dry. Waterproof gloves, shoes (overshoes), jackets and water resistant tights (over trousers) will keep you warm and dry and will enable you to cycle for much longer in the worst of conditions. Putting mudguards on your bikes is also a  good idea, as it helps keep grime off you and your bike. They will also help reduce the spray if you are riding in a group.
  4. Commuting. If you are commuting to work on a bike, keep a dry change of  cycling clothing in work or carry them in your rucksack for the return journey. There is nothing worse then having to put damp clothing on for the homeward trip
  5. Washing.  Try and clean your bike after every wet commute as road grime and salt in winter months is corrosive and can affect you bike’s gears and braking
