Mastering Winter Open Water Swimming: Tips for Safety and Enjoyment

0

Don’t let the cold weather deter you from open water swimming. Embracing the challenge of winter swimming can be both invigorating and rewarding. To help you make the most of your open water experiences, here are some tips to ensure your safety and enjoyment.

Choose the Right Gear:

Invest in a high-quality wetsuit designed for cold water such as the Orca RS1 Thermal Open Water Wetsuit. These wetsuits have specially developed linnings to maximise heat rentention and buoyancy, keeping you warm and afloat. Consider adding neoprene accessories like a base layer, swim cap and booties for extra insulation. Also, opt for goggles with tinted or mirroed lenses to protect your eyes from glare and bright sunlight on the water.

Warm Up Properly:

Warming up is crucial, espcecially in cold water. Engage in light excercises or jogging on the spot to raise your heart rate gradually and get your blood flowing. This not only prepares your body for the shock of entering cold water but also helps trap heat inside your wetsuit. Remember, never jump or dive into cold water; instead, wade in slowly and acclimatise your face to the water before swimming

Know Your Limits & Acclimatise Gradually:

Even if you’re a sesasoned swimmer, cold water, currents and swells demand extra energy. Start with shorter swims and gradually increase both duration and distance as your body acclimatises. Always swim parallel to the shore and never venture too far alone. Swimming with a buddy or a group enhances safety and enjoyment. Listen to your body- if you feel excessively cold or experience numbness, exit the water immediately.

Post-Swim Warm-Up:

Prepare warm, dry clothes, like a thermal robe or Dryrobe to change into immediately after your swim. Gradually warm up with blankets and hot beverages. Avoid the temptation to jump into a hot shower or bath as this sudden exposure to heat, can lead to a drop in blood pressure.

Prioritise Safety

Safety should be your top safety. If you’re new to winter open water swimming, consider joining a local swimming club a swimming group like Oceanbreakers or event with experienced swimmers can offer guidances and support.
