New Year Cycling Resolutions

Bad habits often form without much notice.

We see, then reciprocate, and then continue to do (even if we don’t immediately recognise the harm we’re causing). This is especially true with cycling—since repetition is in its DNA—it’s easy to mimic poor habits along the way.

With the new year rolling around, you’ve got no time to waste with second-rate proclivities. Be a part of the 20% that sees their resolution through to completion by taking our advice on how to get more out of your rides in 2020.

Fuel your body most efficiently by getting your diet under control. This can take shape in establishing a regular eating schedule of three meals a day, setting a specific time to meal prep and shop on selected days of the week, and abstaining from on-bike fueling. Nothing will deplete your body quite like introducing new foods when going for a longer session, so stick to what you know works for your body. Avoid the obvious and excessive consumption of alcohol and foods with high fat/high sugar content to ensure your body is capable of peak performance.

Bobbing is meant for apples, not cycling. You may not even notice your slight tendency to bob up and down during a ride, but focusing on strengthening your upper body and core will keep your body more rigid and in control. Your saddle height may also be the culprit, so look into having a proper bike fit from a professional bike fitter. Cycle SuperStore has a dedicated Retul bike fitting service that is offered by Gary Byrne who has over 20 years experience. For more information about Gary Byrne Bike Fitting, please click HERE

Like your mum says, manners matter. This is especially true when cycling in a group and the inevitable happens: Your turn for a pull arrives. Although rarely stated, the de facto cycling etiquette says to take a pull that is similar in duration and frequency to that of the other riders in the group. If you’re brand new or not quite on the same level, these rules do not apply for a short period of time.

Take it easy! Your body craves rest, so it can repair the damage exerted on your muscles during hard rides. If you can’t stay put for long (or the recommended amount of 1-2 days per week) take up some solid cross-training activities like swimming or yoga to give your body a workout that won’t put stress on the parts trying to heal.
