Turbo Training Triumph: Unlocking Peak Performance with Conn McDunphy’s Top 5 Tips

In an ideal world, we aim to spend as much time as possible outdoors on our bikes. However, weather or a busy schedule can sometimes challenge our pursuit of open road adventures. That’s where the turbo trainer comes in- a game changer that turns your bike into a stationary powerhouse for training.

We’ve enlisted the expertise of renowned Irish cyclist Conn McDunphy. Having won every Irish senior elite national Championship timed event, Conn shares his top 5 tips for maximising your turbo training sessions, offering a unique insight into how he maintains peak performance even in the virtual terrain.

So, buckle up (or rather, clip in) as we embark on a journey to uncover the secrets of turbo training excellence straight from the pedals of Conn McDunphy himself. Whether you’re a seasoned cyclist or just starting out, these tips are sure to elevate your indoor cycling experience to new heights. Let’s roll!

  1. Make it fun. Don’t stick to a constant pace. Mix it up, change cadence and do intervals over and under your desired training zones. Use available training platforms for a real-life feel, mimicking the ever-changing nature of riding outside. Unfortunately we live in a dark and cold country at times but fortunately technology helps us deal with this so make use of it!
  1. Overheating: Ensure proper fans and ventilation. This will make the experience as a whole a lot more enjoyable. Location matters! Don’t absentmindedly set up your trainers beside a radiator for example. I learned this one the hard way and was left wondering why I was sweating profusely!
  1. Nutrition: Fuel on the bike for your indoor rides. Many forget to do this, it is equally as important to fuel indoors as you do outdoors. Cyclesuperstore offers a whole range of bike nutrition so you can have a different flavour for every ride. I always have an electrolyte drink afterwards to balance the inevitable extra sweating.
  1. Good Shorts. On the trainer your bike is completely stable and will not rock. On the road, we rock without realising it, so any small saddle issue will be exacerbated. Use your best pair of shorts on the turbo. It’s what I do.
  1. Adjust your bike accordingly: In virtual racing for example, you don’t need to have your bars slammed or be in an aero position like on the road. A more upright, comfortable position indoors may enhance performance and comfort.

We hope Conn’s tips bring your benefits, helping you get the most of your time on the trainer.
