Don’t Let The Rain Put You Off Cycling.

There is an old saying ‘there is no such thing as the wrong weather only the wrong clothing’ and that can be applicable when it comes to riding your bike. Just because it’s raining doesn’t mean your bike should be left indoors. Advances in technology both in clothing and bicycles has meant cycling in the rain has become less arduous and uncomfortable. However, cycling in the rain requires some important considerations to ensure your safety and comfort. Here’s our top tips when it comes to cycling in the rain.

  • Before you head out on the bike check to ensure your bike is in good condition. Check the brakes, tires and chain. You don’t want to encounter any nasty surprises which may lead to an accident.
  • If you have time, apply wet lube to your chain. It’s water repellent nature prevents it from being washed off the chain.  Also consider applying mudguards to your bike. Not only do they help prevent you from getting splashed but also other people who are cycling with you. You may also consider reducing your tyre pressure. This will help increase the surface area in contact with the road, providing better grip/traction in wet conditions.
  • Wear appropriate clothing. Invest in a good quality cycling jackets and pants to keep yourself dry. Consider wearing moisture wicking layers underneath and to prevent sweat build-up.  This should also be applicable to your footwear. Opt for waterproof cycling shoes or shoes covers to prevent your feet from getting soaked.
  • Rainy conditions can decrease visibility, so wear bright and reflective clothing and use lights to make yourself more noticeable to other road users.
  • When you are out on your bike, slow down and brake carefully. Wet roads reduce braking distance, so brake gently and earlier than you would on dry roads. Be cautious when riding over painted road markings, metal grates or Luas/train rail tracks, as they can become slippery when wet.
  • Stay alert and pay close attention to your surroundings and be prepared for sudden changes in road conditions. If possible, try to avoid cycling through puddles as you don’t know what the water may be hiding or covering. If the rain gets too heavy or intense find shelter and wait for the rain to ease up before continuing your ride.

If your bike gets wet from riding it in the rain always try and dry it off and oil the chain. This will help prevent corrosion appearing on the chain and prevent it from seizing up.
