Wicklow 200 FAQ

With Ireland’s premier cycling event just a week away, we’re here to answer some frequently asked questions to help you prepare

Is there anything I should do prior to the event?

If you’re participating in this year’s Wicklow 200, we recommend getting your bike serviced at your local bike shop before the big day. Most mechanical failures during events can be prevented with simple bicycle maintenance. If you can’t visit a bike shop, you can do some basic maintenance at home. Give your bike a thorough clean, including the drivetrain. Apply the necessary chain lube after cleaning. Check your tires and ensure they are pumped to the recommended pressure. Additionally, inspect your brakes and gears to ensure they’re working optimally.

When and where does number collection take place?

Number collection can be done at the following locations:

  • 9th June, Cycle Superstore, Airton Road: 4pm-7:30pm
  • 10th June, Cycle Superstore, Airton Road: 10am-3pm
  • 11th June, Bray Emmets GAA Club: 5:30am-6:30am

What do I need to bring for number collection and can I collect a number on behalf of someone?

You’ll need to bring your confirmation email containing your QR code. You can either print the QR code or present it on your phone. If you’re collecting a number on behalf of someone, you must bring a copy of their confirmation email (QR code). If you can’t find your confirmation email, a member of the Wicklow 200 team will assist you

What will I receive at number collection?

At number collection, you’ll receive your Wicklow 200 envelope containing your bike plate, wristband, event information document, and a goodie bag

On the eve of the event, is there anything I should do?

To make your morning easier, prepare everything the night before. Attach your bike plates to your bike and pack your bags with all the essentials. Many participants arrive at events missing items like helmets or water bottles, so double-check your gear. It’s also a good idea to pump up your tires on the eve of the event to identify any slow leaks beforehand.

What time does the event start?

The event will start at 7am at the Bray Emmets GAA Club. There is ample parking available, but we recommend arriving early. While you’re allowed to start before the official start time, please note that event services will only be available from 7am.

What should I have with me during the event?

Make sure your bike plate is properly attached, and wear the wristband you receive at number collection. You’ll need to show the wristband at the food stops. For your bike, carry two 750ml bottles and have two spare tubes in your saddlebag. Check the condition of your spare tubes to avoid any issues during the event. Also, bring tire levers and either a regular or CO2 mini pump. If you use a CO2 pump, ensure you know how to use it beforehand. Carry a multitool, preferably one with a chain breaker, and a rear derailleur hanger as a spare. Check the weather and pack clothing accordingly, such as a gilet, leg warmers, knee warmers, or arm warmers that can be easily stowed in your jersey’s pockets. Bring enough energy food and drinks for the event as the food stops may not provide sufficient sustenance. Avoid trying new energy gels or cycling shorts on the day of the event.

Will I get lost on the route?

Before the event, try to familiarize yourself with the route. However, don’t worry if you can’t remember all of it. The route will be marked on the road at every junction where there’s a change of direction. Simply follow the road marks to stay on track. For those taking the 200km route, be aware of the following cut-off points:

  • Cut Off #1 Sally Gap; 32km – Turn off for Wicklow 100: 09:00 (15km/h)
  • Cut Off #2 Hollywood 76km – Turn off for Wicklow Gap: 11:30am

And finally, enjoy every moment of the event, regardless of the distance you choose. All your hard work and training will pay off as you push your limits and experience the thrill of cycling through breathtaking Irish landscapes.
